Ice Dyed Shirt

A friend gave me this shirt and asked me to "Do something fun" on it for them.  Soooooo I soaked it in a soda ash solution. Then I draped and spread out the bottom of the shirt in a bucket and clipped the shoulders to a dowel that is resting across the top of the bucket. I dumped a good layer of ice over the cloth that is spread out in the bottom of the bucket.  I sprinkled the ice cubes with black dye powder. Then I lowered a bit more of the shirt in to the bottom of the bucket and put more ice cubes over it. Then I  sprinkled more black dye powder over the ice cubes. Finally, I sprinkled dye powder directly onto the damp fabric remaining above the ice. Then I let it sit for 24 hours!  Washed out the excess dye and WOW what a design!!!!

This piece was inspired by that wonderful cabbage leaf! Printed up this cloth just before harvesting the last of the cabbage from my veggie garden. Love the white against the deep red cloth. All this cloth was hand dyed.

The winning piece - All hand-dyed cloth and printed with real leaves. The inspiration was the cabbage leaf, the other leaves were from eggplat, tomato and hosta plants.
